Channel of Laurel Creek was heavily scored by floods in summer 2001, leaving intact floodplain forests only on the upper terraces such as this plot. There are now barren cobble and sand bars along much of the creekbed.;Young alluvial terrace with open forest of sycamore and tulip poplar. Sandy soil with coal fragments overlying cobble. Lots of old beaver sign. Forest floor appears recently flooded. May have been on old field, there is an old fenceline through plot.
Representativeness
ELU 1333 (low elevation slope bottom on shale). Tributary floodplain forest which occurs in linear patches on the higher terraces.
Flooding in 2001 deposited sand on these upper terraces. Probably was in agriculture in past (old fence line through plot, mapped as opening on topographic map).
